In the last five years to August 2000, there have been 427 accidents and 624 injuries. Sixty one people have been killed on the road since 1990.
We include pictures of the work to create a new stretch of dual carriageway between Willowburn and Denwick around Alnwick.
The scheme, which will cost £8.1 m to complete, will mean the creation of a new two and a half mile section of carriageway.
The work is scheduled for completion in February 2003.
