Before 1910 the last nine miles of the Charles River was still a tidal estuary but the construction of the Charles River Dam lead to the creation of the fresh water Charles River Basin.
An 18-mile path travels along the entire basin on both the North and South sides of the river.
The Charles River Reservation offers 17 miles of linear park with opportunities for canoeing, sailing, ice skating, baseball, in-line skating, etc.
